We will be on-call for your birth two weeks before your due date and until baby is born. This can change, of course, as your due date approaches.
Once you are admitted to the hospital or are checked in to the birth center or a home birth, we will meet you and stay with you until baby is born, up to 24 hours. We generally stay anywhere from 1 - 2 hours after birth.
One (1) postpartum check at your home
We type up a birth story that goes over all the details from the moment we join you to the moment I leave. Something you can cherish, look back on, and help you recall the events of your birth
During births, we always take photos to help capture as many moments as possible!
METHOD OF PREPARATION
I practice the Traditional Chinese method of placenta preparation. The placenta is prepared in a way that maximizes its replenishment of the tremendous loss of heat and qi that occurs after birth. During preparation, the cord and membranes are removed, the placenta is rinsed, then lightly steamed with ginger. lemon, and jalapeno. It is then sliced thinly and laid out to dehydrate. Once dehydration is complete, the placenta strips are ground into a fine powder and encapsulated for easy storage and consumption.
POSTPARTUM REMEDY
The consumption of placenta is a centuries-old practice used to help restore physical and emotional balance after giving birth. It involves steaming, dehydrating, and encapsulation of the placenta, making consumption palatable and easy. There is no “hard” research proving the benefits of consuming placenta. However, qualitative studies and their reported benefits from those who have taken their encapsulated placenta say they experience:
improved milk supply
more balanced moods
reduced anxiety
increased energy during their postpartum recover

I process your placenta in my own at-home lab while you recover and bond with your baby. The finished capsules are hand delivered to you within a few days. Your capsules will come packaged with detailed instructions on recommended dosage and storage.

What’s Included:
Postpartum support is unique to each family and each shift is different.
Upon arrival for the shift, day or night, we will assess what the parents/family/babe need
We always provide non-judgmental emotional & unbiased support
Baby/Mom duties could include: newborn care, diapering, feeding information, soothing techniques and time for self-care.
Light housework could look like: laundry, dishes, meal prep, tidying up and organizing, taking out the trash, sibling care - both human and fur siblings!
We hold space for the newly postpartum person to process their birth and their new experience as parents. We tend to hold a lot in and having an unbiased trained listener can do wonders!

Two (2), two hour, postpartum checks at your home, including a Postpartum depression screening. Katie has experience in administering and scoring the PHQ-9 and can refer you to your healthcare provider if total score on the screener indicates further assessment by a licensed professional.

Are you an OB patient of Valley Medical Center, in Juneau?
Valley Medical Center has a $500 Doula Scholarship Program for their patients. They pay $500 towards your doula services. We take care of all the paperwork to help keep things running smoothly and less stress on your part.
